The **Fediverse** (commonly shortened to **fedi**)[\[2\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fediverse#cite_note-2)[\[3\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fediverse#cite_note-3)[\[4\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fediverse#cite_note-4) is a collection of [social networking services](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_networking_service) that can communicate with each other (formally known as [federation](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federation_%28information_technology%29)) using a common protocol. Users of different [websites](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Website) can send and receive status updates, [multimedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multimedia) [files](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_file) and other data across the [network](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_network). The term *Fediverse* is a [portmanteau](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portmanteau) of *federation* and *universe*.[\[5\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fediverse#cite_note-5)

The majority of Fediverse platforms are based on [free and open-source software](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_and_open-source_software), and create connections between servers using the [ActivityPub](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ActivityPub) protocol. Some software still supports older federation protocols as well, such as [OStatus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OStatus), the [Diaspora](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diaspora_%28social_network%29) protocol and Zot. Diaspora\* is the only actively developed software project classified under the original definition of *Fediverse* that does not support ActivityPub.[\[6\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fediverse#cite_note-6)[\[7\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fediverse#cite_note-7)
